You’ve got valuable knowledge to share and you want to make an online course. Maybe you’re already teaching face-to-face and want to be able to teach globally, online? Perhaps your clients have said they want to learn flexibly at a time that suits them, or love what you do one-to-one but want a lower-budget way to tap into your expertise?
Whatever your reasons, online courses can free you from working one-to-one, enable you to reach anyone in the world with Internet access and take a step towards earning passive income.
There are big challenges, though!
There’s a lot to learn, including making videos, editing videos and setting up the technology so people can only access your course once they’ve paid. Then you have to decide what to put in the course, what to leave out and how to price it, as well as how you’re going to market it. And all of this has to fit in alongside your ‘day job’.
Maybe you’ve already tried to make an online course but felt overwhelmed and it’s still not complete months or years later?
Perhaps you’ve considered taking a course so you don’t have to struggle through it all alone, but all the courses out there seem to be either taught by ‘make money online’ people or over-priced. Or both.
So, what’s the solution?
Focus on keeping it simple and getting it done. After all, a short course that’s up for sale is way better than a big, half-finished one that’s gathering dust on your hard drive.
Here’s what you need to get your short course made and up for sale, fast:
- Use a lot of screencast videos – that way you don’t have to worry about your camera, lighting, backdrop or even checking your hair!
- Use a training platform so you don’t have to set up your own website or mess around with plugins.
- Have someone holding you accountable, because putting your course creation on the back-burner when you get busy is WAY too tempting.
- Access to someone who has done it before so they can answer your questions.
- A roadmap to follow.
- To keep your first course short and tightly focused, then build on that later (either add to the first course or make more courses).
- To keep one eye on your marketing, but not get overwhelmed by it.
Which is exactly what I’ve put together for you! Introducing my course…
Here’s how it works:
I love the flexibility of self-study online courses, but the amount of content can be overwhelming and often there’s no accountability. So I want to do something different! Here’s how Create your online course in 7 weeks works…
- You sign up for the course
- I’ll send you the link to module 1.
- You complete module 1, send me an email to tell me you’ve done it and then I’ll send you the link to module 2. If you have any questions feel free to send me an email.
- You complete module 2, send me an email and I’ll send you the link to module 3.
- Repeat for the other modules, emailing your questions as you have them.
- Voila! You have your online course to sell.
This means you have accountability AND can take the course at a time that suits you.
What if you fall behind schedule? Well, I know life can get in the way, so although I’ve planned it so each module takes about a week to complete, I will offer email support for six months from when you start the course.
And here’s what you’ll achieve by the end of this course:
- You’ll have created your own online course – including videos, activities and course descriptions – all uploaded to a training platform and ready to sell.
- You’ll know exactly how to create an online course – from start to finish – so you can easily create more courses by yourself later.
- You’ll have a simple but effective marketing plan for getting students to join your course.
This course is for you if:
- You’re a trainer, coach, therapist or blogger who already has subject knowledge and wants to package what you know into an online course.
- You’re willing to create your own course as you work through this one. This course is all about learning by doing.
- You’ve got an hour each week to watch the video and an extra two hours to implement what I cover in the video.
- You’re willing to appear in videos – it can be just your voice and not your face if you prefer! It’s OK if you feel nervous, but you’ll need to be willing and able to do it.
- You already have an audience, even if it’s a very small one. This could be your therapy/coaching clients, your blog readers or your social media following.

This course probably isn’t for you if:
- You haven’t yet chosen a broad subject area or niche for your course.
- You hate the idea of recording your voice or appearing on camera and aren’t able to get past this before you start the course.
- You don’t have the time to implement what you learn in the course as you go along.
- If you need to demonstrate something complex such as an art or a craft. This course doesn’t cover the lighting and camera set-up that you need to do this.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A computer
- A smartphone with a video camera
- To be willing to spend a small amount on a microphone and screencasting software if you need them. (Under £100 / $100 in total).
About Helen, your trainer

I was a face-to-face software trainer for over ten years, then I went online! I’ve made courses at Udemy and on other training platforms, too. Most recently I’ve been making done-for-you courses for other business owners to sell on their sites here at Totally Courses. Along the way I’ve co-authored a book and learned a lot about online marketing and social media.
